A Short History Lesson Of Nutella.

There are so many ways to eat Nutella. Nutella pancakes, Nutella milkshakes, Nutella brownies, Nutella babka, Nutella bread pudding, Nutella crepes, Nutella stuffed cookies… Phew, the list is endless.

The story of Nutella is posted right on their website. After WWII, cocoa was extremely scarce. An Italian baker named Pietro Ferrero created a sweet paste made from hazelnuts, sugar, and just a little of the rare cocoa. The precursor to Nutella was born! In 1946...

The sweet paste of the first recipe was shaped into a loaf that could be sliced and spread on bread. Named after a local carnival character, they called it "Giandujot." In 1954, the Giandujot paste was transformed into a creamy new product that was easier to spread, and was called SuperCrema. Then in 1964...

Nutella is born! The recipe was improved, leading to this hazelnut and cocoa cream. The story continues with new packaging and products, but the recipe will remain unchanged.

So Why Do I Love Nutella?

Since its invention, Nutella has become the hero of cocoa and hazelnuts. It’s been turned into everything and anything. The list is endless and grows daily. Chefs and home bakers love to stuff their creations with Nutella.

I know we’ve used it with our chocolate chip cookies. You can modify Cookie Chips® Baking Mix to make thick, soft, and chewy chocolate chip cookies. After you have your dough, stuff them with Nutella and then bake. Delicious, gooey, and chocolatey.

What makes this Nutella stuff so irresistible? Well, to begin with, it’s creamy. I mean, super smooth. How do they do that? The flavor, too, is out of this world. But is Nutella healthy? Some people think Nutella is a superfood to be eaten by the jarful to gain health benefits. Some claim that Nutella is nutritious. They say the hazelnut content can boost the health of your heart. Hmmm. Not sure I agree with this. There are better ways to boost your heart health.

While I don’t think Nutella is a superfood in the healthy sense, it’s definitely pretty super in the deliciously fun sense. We don’t have to only eat heart healthy foods 24/7 to be healthy so, there’s room for Nutella.

Did you know there is a World Nutella Day? Yep. February 5th. We have some great Nutella recipes to share and they can’t wait until then. Check out the recipes on my blog.

A final note. There are a lot of copycat Nutella’s on the market. One’s made with peanut butter, others with hazelnuts like the original. They just don’t seem to measure up in texture or taste. There’s just no replacing real Nutella. So, don’t waste your time buying knock offs.
